SpaceX's $60B Bet on AI Coding
点击文中橙色高亮词查释义
On June 16, SpaceX announced an agreement to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the popular AI coding assistant Cursor, in an deal valued at around sixty billion dollars. The transaction, expected to close in the third quarter, came only days after SpaceX completed its blockbuster Nasdaq listing at a market value above two trillion dollars. If the deal falls through for reasons other than antitrust, SpaceX will owe Anysphere a ten billion dollar .
Cursor's rise has been unusually fast. Founded in 2022 by four MIT graduates, the company grew from a twenty-five billion dollar valuation in early 2025 to twenty-nine billion by November, before doubling again in private markets. Its annualized enterprise revenue now stands at roughly two and a half billion dollars, with sixty percent coming from corporate customers. The sixty-billion price dwarfs the earlier valuation, a clear sign of how aggressively the AI coding market is being priced.
Strategically, the deal closes a clear gap for xAI, the AI arm merged into SpaceX earlier this year. xAI's Grok model has lagged behind OpenAI and Anthropic in real coding tasks, and the company has openly admitted it needs help. Cursor brings a loyal developer base, a polished product, and direct access to enterprise procurement. Combined with SpaceX's Colossus supercomputer, said to match one million H100 chips in compute, Cursor could give xAI its first serious in coding.
The risks are also real. Antitrust will be intense, since one person would now control r ockets, satellite internet, a large language model, social media and a flagship developer tool. Internal integration is never simple at this scale, and several of Cursor's top engineers have already moved to xAI, raising questions about who stays. The bigger signal, however, is strategic: the AI race is shifting from raw model quality to owning the entry point that every developer touches first.
